Add contacts via API, not as subclient

I'm trying to import clients into WHMCS using the API, and some of them have additional contacts associated. When I add these additional contacts through the API, they are automatically set as sub-clients, which means that they require unique email addresses. This means that many of the contact additions fail.

The UpdateContact API allows the subaccount value (true/false) to be set, but the AddContact API doesn't. Is there a way around this using hooks or anything else? Or will I have to resort to manually adding these contacts?
