What does the promise "Transfer now to extend your domain by 1 year!*" mean?

The domain transfer page displays the promise:

"Transfer now to extend your domain by 1 year!*"

What does this mean?

I placed an order to transfer a domain ( as if I were a client), and I can't see that there is any extension of a year. The domain transfer only registers it for a year.

I would like to be able to explain this to my clients if/when they ask.

when you transfer a domain, usually* it adds an additional year to the expiry date - so if a .com domain is due to expire on 1 January 2019, transferring it today should effectively renew it for a further year - changing the expiry date to 1 Jan 2020.

* I say 'usually' because some TLDs don't add additional years on transfers - one being .uk domains where transfers are free (in terms of Nominet)... if you transfer a .uk domain, then the expiry date doesn't change.
