Is there any way to force users to update their client details upon login when column firstname or lastname are null or empty?

At the time of sign-up ? if yes , you can set Optional Client Profile Fields through setup->general settings->other.

At the time of login ? why you allowed to register with out firstname ?

i'd go along with Basheer on this one - the easier way is to make them required fields (e.g not optional and unticked in setup->general settings->other) - that solves the problem ever occurring...

 

but to answer your specific question, yes you could force clients to update their first/last name upon login using an action hook.
