Baja
Hey, This is kind of a curiosity question about organization to eliminate screwing up files by accidentally uploading old files and over writing new ones. I was just wondering what method everyone uses to organize your local files and backups of whmcs. Especially when in comes to doing version updates. What do you recommend? What procedures do you take to organize your files locally? Do you separate all your edited files from the whmcs folder? Then compare before you do a version update to make sure there isn't a file that will need to be changed? What system does Matt use to keep track of files that he has changed and files that are new so he can create a version update? Any thoughts? bear
I keep the current files with my site files, in the same folder structure as the server. When an update comes along, I use a file comparison tool to compare templates with my edited versions. If there are changes, I merge and edit as needed (after backing them all up), then upload the whole package from my local site directory. Encoded files are ignored in the comparison, and uploaded as is.
Roger
That's a home run. Can't do any better than that.
Baja
Great thanks for the input. I have a file compare in notepad ++ which is nice and free. It shows them side by side so you can see the differences. Do you use one that will compare by folder? For example tell you what files are different in two different folders and then list the results. Plus tell you one folder has an extra file/s too? I have been pretty good about all of this up to this point and do pretty much the same thing you suggested, I just thought there might be a better way. I think I will start keeping track and list all edited files and new files I create in a excel file or something. That way I do not have to do things by memory. Thanks again, Baja
bear
Personally I use either Beyond Compare (my favorite) or Ultra Compare. Compare entire folders, different types of comparison and more.

bear
No problem. If you decide to check out Ultra Compare, make sure you consider the Ultra Edit program as well, sold in a bundle. Outstanding text editor, with edit from FTP, find text in files within directories and more. It's why I wound up buying UC in the first place.
