the golden rule to follow, when removing sidebars or navbars, is to always first check that what you want to remove, is there before trying to remove it - otherwise you'll get an error or blank page. :idea:

 

once you get used to writing the hooks to modify the navbar, it will become easier... but there are a couple of addons available in the Marketplace if you would prefer not to.
