Upgrading canceled/expired packages?

Hello,

Currently the only way to upgrade a package is if it's active. We have the following situation:

We have a free trial that lasts several months. Upon the completion of the trial the service basically expires so by default it's not possible to upgrade it to a specific paid package. Is there a module or a workaround on how this can be implemented? An ideal solution would be if our client logs in to WHMCS, sees that their trial is expired and then they can upgrade it to a specified package, not view/choose from the whole shopping cart.

I hope that makes sense.

Thank you for any insight or help.

as an admin, you could upgrade a cancelled product - but I know you want the client to be able to do it themselves.

coming at this from another angle, what about using the Email Marketer to contact the client x days before expiry and get them to upgrade before the trial expires?
