Product Add On / Option

Hi,

I have a main product (e.g. a virtual server with 1 TB disk space). The customer has now the option to add additional disk space.

Order:

virtual server (with 1 TB disk space)

+ 2 TB disk (space additional)

This works fine with the feature "product options", if the customer order the additional disk space, when he orders the main product (superscript server).

But what if the customer orders the virtual server with 1 TB disk space and a month later he like to order just additional disk space? Is it possible to order just the product option and where I have to configure this?

I've found out it would be possible with a "product addon" but there I can just add the product addon (yes/no) but can't define a quantity. It's important that the customer is able to choose the quantity of the disk space.

Thanks in advanced for your help!

Hi Brian,

That's the same I thought. I've already read this knowledge base article, but it doesn't solve my problem.

If the user orders the option (additional disk space) right by the main order (virtual server) the process works fine. But what if the user would like to JUST buy additional disk space, because he have already have bought a virtual server a long time ago but need more disk space just now?

Is it possible to just order the option alone? If so, where I have to do the settings?

Or do I have to create an own product for "disk space". In this case it wouldn't be an option, it would be an additional product instead and the user would have to order both product together. If he would like to order the disk space afterwards I would have to check if he have the main product (virtual server) and is allowed to order disk space, because it makes no sense to just order disk space without a server.

I hope I could now explain my idea more clearly.

Hi Sybille,

let's say you have a VPS product that uses a configurable option for disk space, e.g with a minimum and maximum range of 1TB -> 10TB.

as you say, during the initial order process this will work fine - the customer can go to the website and select the amount of disk space they want.

if, at some later time, the client wants to upgrade from 1TB (initial order selection) to 3TB, they can do so themselves from their client area.

however, for them to be able to do this, you must have enabled the option from within Upgrades tab of the Product setup (for this product) in the Admin Area.

http://docs.whmcs.com/Automated_Upgrades_and_Downgrades#Configurable_Options_Upgrades

Configurable Options Upgrades

With the configurable options upgrade configuration, this allows your clients to upgrade or downgrade the configurable option selections you offer on the product. You do not need to specify any further configuration for this - by simply ticking the box the upgrade options will be shown to the client in the client area. The upgrade price for configurable options are calculated in exactly the same was products described above.

from the Product Details page for this product in the client area, the client will see an option in the sidebar called "Upgrade/Downgrade Options" - from this, they'll be able to increase (or decrease) their configurable option selections (e.g Disk Space).

When they place an upgrade or downgrade order, they will be refunded what they haven't used of the current cycle on the existing product/service and then charged for the remainder of the cycle at the new product/services price. The next due date doesn't change.

btw - if you wanted to limit the Disk Space amount in the initial order to no more than 1TB, you could do so by setting artificial limits on the order form slider - but if you don't need to do that, then don't worry about reading the link below! :)

so as you can hopefully see, using configurable options might be the cleaner way, both for you and your client, to solve the additional disk space issue... have a play with the option using a test account/product within your WHMCS and you should see what I mean.
