System Health & Unable To Connect to Database

I just upgraded from WHMCS 5.3.14 to 6.1.1.

The upgrade went smoothly. After logging in to the WHMCS Admin I went to HELP - HELP & UPDATES.

I am receiving an "failed" error telling me my PHP version needs to be updated.

The server's default is 5.3.x. I have the ability to use a different PHP version by adding a line to my .htaccess file.

When I add this line to the .htaccess file for my WHMCS directory, for PHP 5.4, I then get an error that WHMCS can no longer connect to the database.

I remove the line from the .htaccess, thus using the servers default PHP 5.3, and WHMCS can then connect to the database.

Can anyone suggest a possible solution? I'd be happy to share any necessary information.

Thanks!
