Collection of issues, problems and tips while upgrading to 6

The last thing I was waiting for it having to update all my websites to a new version, that I'm afraid would cause days of work to fix all the problems, bugs, explain mishaps to customers, run into (Paid) template issues and therefore more costs... I don't have the time nor the money.

Maybe it's not that negative at all.

Is there a list of tips, tricks hints, errors, common problems etc. collected here somewhere, that we could use as a checklist when trying to upgrade the first website from 5.3.14 to 6? What do I expect in terms of website layout/template etc.

i'm not aware of any checklist - perhaps the best place to check for problems would be the Bug Reports forum... though that definitely wouldn't be a definitive list as there will be plenty of bugs reported via tickets that won't be discussed there.

I think most problems are caused by a lack of planning before the upgrade, and/or not understanding the differences between the two versions... it's not a minor upgrade, there are significant differences between the two versions.

the best advice that I can think of is to contact support and get a free developers license - that will allow you to have a duplicate v5.3.14 installation to practice the upgrade on... before upgrading a live site.

you could then use a copy of the current database, install all existing addons - but disable the cron (or don't set it up)... have it replicate your live v5.3 site as close as you can, and then when you're happy with it, try upgrading the developer site to v6.

also, check that whether your existing addons/hooks will work with v6 - either without an update or with updated versions... if they don't, you'll have to contact the author; use an alternative solution or delay the upgrade.

Thanks Brian. (sorry, been travelling....which is the main reason I can't use this hassle...)

Is there a place I can read this? What I should know and plan before upgrading?
