Wabun
Using v5, I am upset to read that the portal mode is going to be removed in v6, why? Is there a solution to using portal mode, having my own website for years, do I need to change that? Any help or advise? Thanks
brian!
I think in the short-term, the Portal theme will still work with v6... it's just that it's no longer being shipped or updated with v6. http://docs.whmcs.com/Version_6.0_Release_Notes Upgrading will not change the theme your WHMCS installation is configured to use and all previous templates compatible with WHMCS 5.x versions can still be used in Version 6.0. i've just opened it in my v6 dev, and it looks the same to me - though it's not a template I tend to use often.
Wabun
Hi Brian, thanks for the fast response, what is 'usual' to do if you don't want to use the portal mode/template?
brian!
Hi Brian, thanks for the fast response, what is 'usual' to do if you don't want to use the portal mode/template? use one of the others? v6 now gets shipped with two client-area templates - "Six" and "Five" (the old 'Default')... most of the templates that i've used were based on "Default"... I was never a big fan of "Portal" (though I know many are). I think the way to think of it is that only new features will be added into "Six" - they won't necessarily be added to "Five" and they certainly won't be added to "Portal"... I would imagine if your site is based on "Portal", then you can continue to use it with v6 - though it might be an idea to get a developers license, so that you can test it in v6 to see if there are any problems.
Wabun
So if I understand it correct I need to do something now if using my current situation Website + Portal I will lose functionality. I will have a look into this developers license, thanks very much.
brian!
So if I understand it correct I need to do something now if using my current situation Website + Portal I will lose functionality. I think it's more a case of if you stick with Portal, you won't get *new* functionality - Portal should continue to function with v6 - so your Portal site should be fine... but there is always the possibility that WHMCS might introduce/change a feature that breaks Portal - so just be aware of that. also, you don't have to upgrade to v6 unless you need/want to use the new features - if you aren't going to use them and want to stick with v5.3 for now (to ensure your site continues to work as you want), then you can do so. I would imagine that it's unlikely they'll be any further updates for v5.3 (unless a security update is released). I will have a look into this developers license, thanks very much. if you have a leased or owned license direct with WHMCS, then I think it should be free.
Wabun
Hi Brian, I have an owned license for quite a few years now, I just got my new shiny developer key and now it's time to freshen all up. Do you know it's possible to swap completely website to whmcs only? So no more my current situation: Website + folder with whmcs installed in there?
brian!
you could install whmcs into the public_html folder (or equivalent).
