Hosting - New Client's Existing Website Transfer - Where are the supporting tutorials

There seems to be a gaping whole in the documentation or more likely the terminology i am using is not right.

Basically what i am looking for is a step by step example showing how to transfer and existing hosting account with working website in place on the domain/s over to the client's new hosting account with us.

I know you need to make a backup and transfer files over via file manager or ftp client but i have been hoping that is a some documentation somewhere just to refresh me.

I have transferred a domain over to namecheap ready so i can test transferring a primary domain with a simple 4 page site on it.

This isn't something that can be done from within WHMCS. You can set up the account and the domain transfer in WHMCS, but to back up and recreate the site from one server to another typically requires manual backup/restore, outside of WHMCS.

The method used would depend on the server control panel on each server.

I understand that. I guess i was just hoping that there might be some guidelines somewhere. Hostgator, who we have the reseller account with, are usually very good and helpful. But in this case offer nothing. All info they offer points towards paying them to do it for $15.

I know the principles of what to do and have done it before. Last time it was a personal account and hostgator were on the line. all went well but for some reason the sql database had an error. The problem was fixed by HG but they never explained what went wrong. In fact they told me i did everything right.

As above, WHMCS is simply the billing and control client interface

I assume the providers use WHM/cPanel ?

If so, then see the cPanel documentation

You then need to upload the backup from the outgoing provider to the new provider, and inform them the upload is ready for importing

Equally, if there are lots of customers accounts then it is best to do this in batches (of about 10), once completed check, and then repeat until all are transferred

If you are already using WHMCS, then don't forget to transfer your own website

Set the website to disabled before you do this, the process then only takes as long as the new provider takes to import the backup

The final stage is to amend the existing Server settings within WHMCS at the new provider, to match any changes that have been applied (there should be no need to amend existing client accounts)

The only issue that might exist is if you have uploaded the data separately to the new provider into new accounts at the new provider (usually to avoid any additional import costs)

You then need to set new passwords within WHM/cPanel, so you need to copy these into WHMCS, and inform the customer (simply reissue the welcome email)
