TLD's Question

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

Just wondering if someone can help me. Currently starting my own Web hosting company, ive worked for one pretty much for about 4 years, I have alot of money to invest in a company which why I started.

Been looking all over the interenet for a simple answer to my question which is:

Do you have to sell domains to allow customers to transfer domains to you, I have been told I have to?

I dont want to sell domains, just allow customers to transfer them to me.

Do you actual mean *transfer* the domain to your registrar, or did you simply mean *host* them with you ?

In order for them to "transfer" their domain to "your" registrar, you must have an account with the registrar (which, by definition, means that you would have the ABILITY to sell domains, but doesn't mean you have to).

However, if your client's domain is hosted at another registrar, they can simply update their name servers with yours and won't have to "transfer" the domain at all. But, this won't be viable for people who registered their domain at another host and want to move completely away from them. We use Enom as our registrar, but I think WHMCS might have a freebie reseller account for a registrar they can give you... I don't know.

Hope that makes sense.

And further to Tom,

Even though you may not want to sell new domain names, if the client has transferred the name to you you will inevitably come up against a renewal at some point.

So in that sense you have to be able to 'sell' domains as a reseller even if its just to renew them!
