Custom Product Fields

How are these supposed to work?

The manual isn't helpful and confusing :?

What I thought Custom Product Fields allowed was for me to enter a fuller description of the product I sell. Then, when invoices are produced that fuller product detail would show on that invoice. But that is not how it appears!

The Custom Invoice Tab (on the Products dialog) shows:

  • Field Name
  • Field Type
  • Description
  • Validation
  • Select Options

Common sense tells me that I only need the first three options as all I want to do is display some text on the invoice without any client interaction.

So this is what I entered;

Field Name: mycustomfield1

Field Type: Text area

Description: "My great value hosting plan that I am really pleased you want." (without quotes of course)

I then made sure to check the 'Show on Invoice' box.

Having done all that I save and close.

Now, back at the clients invoice, I click 'view invoice' but it does not appear to show anything other that the normal out of the box invoice.

Am I supposed to add these fields to the viewinvoice.tpl file?

Or are Product Custom fields not meant for this sort of thing?

I understand.

So no further on to providing a fuller description to include on Invoices

I was under the impression this requirement was being addressed and I was certain it was something to do with custom fields. :?

Hopefully something will come along one day to allow a more complete description to be used on emails and invoices.
