Installing WHMCS in the root

We currently have our installation installed in a subfolder but we've been asked to move it into the root directory to shorten the URL's and make them more 'semantic'. I'd like to find out upfront if anyone has had any problems or has heard of any problems having everything together in the root. I know technically what needs to be done to get it working, but I'm wondering if there may be upgrade issues or any restrictions I haven't yet considered?

Any comments would be much appreciated.

I can't see any issues and it certainly would be possible

However it is not recommended as later maintenance and upgrades could be an issue (as in most cases these are applied to folder and leaving this field blank may return an error)

Advise your client to simply suggest a suitable folder name

My recommendation is NOT to use the default name, that way automated responses are reduced (spam, hack, exploit, etc)

Thank you, but I don't understand why you think upgrades/maintenance could be an issue? What do you mean by 'leaving this field blank may return an error'? For upgrades surely its no different, we simply take the new set of files and overwrite the existing set, right? Or am I missing something?

The upgrade is normally browser based and requests the folder in which WHMCS is installed

That's news to me, I don't ever recall having to enter the folder name - I thought the install.php script was just to upgrade the database. Thanks for the info.

Yes, you run the php file in the browser, which then connects to the database

However I found another customer could not update as the field was left blank / empty

I suspect this issue resolved around the entry in the database being empty and the update script ended at that point

Ok great, I'm not worried about that. Has anyone else experienced any issues having WHMCS in the root?

There's no issue with having WHMCS installed in the root. The upgrade progress is the same no matter where WHMCS is installed unless you're making use of the extra security steps. In this case some the admin folder will need to be re-named before uploading.
