Inetbiz
From announcements section: http://forum.whmcs.com/showthread.php?t=40965 I fail to see how it's beneficial to lend the trademark of WHMCS to odesk when you have not vetted any developers to actually know your API? A really valuable announcement would have been that you have worked with odesk to develop a new test specific to WHMCS API that developers may now take to show they are capable of handling the job. Far too often on oDesk, developers will splatter job postings with a wide net and promise the moon and the stars with no real skill to even take on the job. Maybe consider a section of WHMCS with odesk profiles of an approved developer list that have met the minimum skill with your API IMHO

WHMCS CEO Matt Posted September 8, 2011 WHMCS CEO Share Posted September 8, 2011 To counter that, I would say that not all custom work relating to WHMCS really involves the API. For example customising templates, adding custom pages, third party gateways, etc... And our developer documentation & structures are simple enough that most PHP programmers can interpret and understand them without necessarily being familiar with WHMCS. One of the specific reasons that we've chosen oDesk to partner with for this purpose is that developers with them do have the option to undergo tests in order to prove they are capable in the technologies they have selected - PHP, MySQL, Jquery, etc... And because they have a feedback rating and protection system so that you can both see reviews from previous employers of the user, and have some protection should things not work out. Having said that, if enough users of WHMCS use the service, then a WHMCS Group specifically for developers familiar with WHMCS is not out of the question. rlshosting
You don't have to use the API to do everything. If you don't like the work they do, leave them a bad rating or Hire WHMCS to work for you instead.
Inetbiz
Smarty Template Engine and WHMCS - Maybe a nice data schema in your docs will speed up development? Custom Pages - Agreed, you have docs to provide information about adding additional pages Third Party Gateways - Requires knowledge of the gateway's API And since it may take a while for developers on oDesk to become familiar enough with WHMCS, it's the reason I asked of you to possibly think about a section that grabs oDesk API information about the developer. A showcase of developers who are competent with WHMCS, Smarty and it's tight integration with the billing software until market place forces behoove oDesk to develop tests for whmcs. Require whmcs login, let the whmcs owner nominate developer by asking odesk developer ID and grab that profiles information via oDesk API and begin populating a showcase of competent whmcs developers? There would be value to this information. WHMCS owners are happier and the popularity of whmcs grows.

All the mods i have made, has been done without any access to their API and apart from that, then WHMCS isn't that expensive to hire to fix any bigger things and they are quite fast as well.
Inetbiz
The thread topic was about an endorsement/partnership of whmcs and odesk. There are less experienced whmcs customers than some of us and those who would fall prey to hiring someone of less valid experience and skill sets. While it is true that someone with PHP, xHTML, Jquery can do wonders, they may not know as much about the functionality of whmcs billing software. Unneeded billing hours would be spent while the developer 'learns' how to aggregate data back out of the database. I'm just advocating custom pages from whmcs that showcases developers who know whmcs software.
jeremyhaber
It is definitely true that developers who really know WHMCS are the best people to hire. I know from my own experience I have spent hours and hours really figuring out how WHMCS works and how to work around the whole ioncube encoding to make WHMCS do what I want. Just recently I had to completely reinvent the cart to do something that it was never intended to do. If I didn't have the knowledge to develop it and use some of WHMCS's internal functions, it would have taken me a month to do what I did in a week. But then again you may find someone on odesk willing to work for peanuts and do a pretty good job.
wsd
Hi, I can not see the difference on whether you find a developer here in the forum or via oDesk, you can then also find developed here on the forum who can not develop simple modules for WHMCS. So I'm very interested in where I can see who has passed such a test of knowledge of the API, of the developer who is here on the forum
