tanya7zhou
Where do you guys buy your SSL certificate at great rates? Hostgator said I can pay $50 which comes with a FREE install, Is that a great offer? Do you guys know a corner where I can go and get a good one like yours at great rates Cheers T
Roger
If you want to just be able to use https in your url. Then $50.00 is not a good deal at all. If you have signed up for an enom account under WHMCS. Then you can purchase a cert for less than $20.00 that will do the job. You'll have to install it. But if you can read, you can do it.

There is no way we can install it by ourselves on their server, is that right, or there is a way?
Roger
I'm not familiar with HostGator. If you're speaking of installing a cert on your domain that is on a shared hosting server at HostGator. Depends on the control panel. With cPanel the you can generate the CSR that is required for the cert and also install the cert. If you have a low experience level with such things. The $10.00 install fee may be worth it. Good luck.. -Roger

You can't install it yourself if you are on a HG shared or reseller package as you don't have root WHM access. You will need a VPS or dedicated account to be able to self install.

Roger
Not with HG shared or reseller accounts..Thats good enough reason to not be using them. Take the controls out of your control panel then charge you extra for doing what those very controls are for. @tanya7zhou, if I were you. I'd find another reseller that doesn't want to get into your pocket when you need to do basic tasks with your account. simplybe
Does the $50 include the dedicated ip. If you don't already have a dedicated ip you will need one before you can install a cert. I don't think HG are being unreasonable by preventing normal shared hosting clients from installing ssl. Installing ssl can be done wrong in so many ways by the client and in extreme cases break apache. I would not allow clients to install ssl as most of the time it results in a support ticket anyway so you may aswell install it for them. I don't charge though for the install.
easyhosting
I don't think HG are being unreasonable by preventing normal shared hosting clients from installing ssl. I think they are. i have many shared hosting clients (50) with SSLcerts and out of the 50 only 1 requested assistance.

I think charging is unreasonable ! but given cpanels past history with installing ssl from cpanel I would rather do the installs for them and make sure it is all working. I can't speak for other control panels . I suppose it depends on personal experience and the type of clients you have. Most of my clients are very good and rarely submit tickets, however most would have no idea how to generate the correct csr and install the cert without help.

ninak
The only way that you can install a ssl on shared hosting is if you purchase a dedicated IP but Hostgator does not offer dedicated IP's on their shared hosting.(Yes you can have a dedicated IP on shared for a small additional fee per month)
easyhosting
Hostgator does not offer dedicated IP's on their shared hosting.(Yes you can have a dedicated IP on shared for a small additional fee per month) Strange as a lot of online stores only have a single site and use a shared environment, which for security needs a dedicated IP and SSL cert. I have several clients with online stores on std shared hosting packages as why give a client a reseller package with WHM etc. when they dont and wont use these features/resources. Yes you can have a dedicated IP on shared for a small additional fee per month most hosts will charge anyway for a Ded IP

Ergo the cost currently is $10.00 On the shared hosting (not reseller) it is the same. Every one shares the server and the allocated IP but you may add an ssl only to a dedicated IP. Hostgator does this for you for a charge of $10.00. (They do not charge an additional monthly fee for dedicated IP) The main thing is that you do need a dedicated IP for ssl to be installed properly no matter who installs it.

digweb11
And of course if you want a FREE SSL certificate, I do recommend startcom (startssl.com); However they will upsell if you make a certificate mistake. ie. must have your certificate name ready. (and only one)... Just my two cents, a few ssl providers out there, and many getting hacked all the time... But if your looking for a quick solution, startssl usually has your certificate available within a few hours of applying for it and probably a good idea to know what your doing when installing certs. <<removed>>

There is no way we can install it by ourselves on their server, is that right, or there is a way? dont listen to the crap that hostgator techs talk, they get a comission for sales. they told me i couldnt do it years ago, i was on their shared hosting and i installed it myself through cpanel, its not difficult to do. whmcs actually do ssl certs on this site, $12.95 thats marginally above that they charge for them as a sub-reseller under them in enom, so you might as well just buy it in their.. dont go for the hostgator enom one either, they only do you a retail account, your not a reseller under them, i paid $19.99 for my first and second certs, those were hostgator-enom. now i have the whmcs-enom ive cut costs drastically. rapidssl Edited June 11, 2012 by disgruntled

We all have this at one time or another i know, and its annoying, but it is a fact if we cant get the prices down we cant get or clients prices down, needs must
easyhosting
unlike hosting they dont seem to get cheaper for longer terms, yes most do, but not many ssl suppliers will provide prices/plans for over 12 months we pay $38 a year for our Comodo instant SSL cert, and this includes hackerpoof and PCI compliance
