Why links on icons?

At various places within admin area there are lists (e.g. products, email templates, etc.)

Everywhere, we have click on a small icon (similar to one I've kept for this thread) at far right to edit.

Why can't the links be directly placed on the description itself?

On a wider screen, the icons are too far from the description and we have to be careful while clicking on them.

Additionally, if links are placed on descriptions, icons can be removed and lists can be accommodated in columns. This way there will not be any vertical scroll.

I agree...took me quite a while to understand I had to click on an icon to edit. And it's the same in client area. You see your hosting package but if you click on the domain name you go to the site. At least a "Edit" or View Details" should be in the column header along with the other header descriptions....I'm fed up with telling my customers how it works.....
