Blank page on affiliate referral link

I am REALLY new to any referral system let alone the one in WHMCS so work with me here.

I added the custom links in the affiliate system setup section in the backend. Two links, one displays the banner, one shows the raw code the client can use to paste into his or her site.

<a href="http://mysupercoolaffiliatewebsite.com/billing/*?aff=001">

<(a href="http://mysupercoolaffiliatewebsite.com/billing/*?aff=001"><(img src=http://mysupercoolaffiliatewebsite.com/images/banners/columbusgeekbanner.png width="468" height="60" border="0")><(/a)>

I then go into the clients section of WHMCS and login using their credentials. I see they have the banner displayed properly and the code to use below it.

In the middle of the page it has this referral code. I assume this is in case they want a text link instead of banner.

If I go to that link I assume the client will get some sort of referral or ding or something, but all that happens is a blank page. My 404 does not kick in or anything.

The client has been added as an "affiliate" in my admin backend.

Am I missing something or is this broke? Am I setting it up right?
