Understanding Packages and Domains

Recommended Posts

Hi,

We are new to WHMCS having just transferred over from ClientExec.

I am trying to understand the concept of Packages vs Domains.

I think Packages is fairly simple - ie. we have a hosting plan, and the client is on that plan, so therefore, he is on a package that renews monthly, yearly etc.

So in WHMCS - under Products/Services for that customer, it shows the package, say HostPlan1, and there is the domain listed - say domain1.com

In addition to the Products/Services section there is a Domains section - this also lists the domain domain1.com.

Now this is where my confusion lies - what is the Domain name section for? it looks like a domain management?

So some questions that might clear this up:

1. If we have a client, for whom we ONLY host their website - should their domain appear under the Packages section AND domain section?

2. If YES, to number one - why and what do we do with it?

3. If NO, to number one - That would mean that their domain ONLY shows in the Products/Services section - and Domains section is completely blank - right?

4. Now what if there opposite were true - ie. we registered a domain name for a customer, but DO NOT host it. Does that mean their domain should appear in ONLY the domain name section? or no where?

If we could get answer to the above, I think we'd be set :)

Thanks for the help.

PS - if you want to know why we are confused - it is because Clientexec was completely different - they didn't have a domain name only section. So when we imported, WHMCS made every hosting client have their domain in both the products and domain section. any way - long story :?
