cPanel Access and Client Details

BoardBoss

Question

I'll start by admitting I may be overlooking answers that are either on this forum, or in the documentation. After searching for hours in both locations, and trying different things in the software, I am going to risk appearing braindead by asking. Remember, there are no stupid questions... ;-)

I am in the middle of a 15-day trial and have manually added several domains from my registrar without trouble. I added hosting account details for a client I know very well and one that I knew would be patient with me as I went the WHMCS setup/testing process.

The old billing software, ModernBill 4 (and 5), stored client details such as IP address, etc. in the details section for a given hosted account. I don't see where WHMCS does this. I tried importing a domain via the WHMCS utility script, which succeeded, but the IP address did not come into WHMCS with that import. Is there somewhere in WHMCS to store the IP address and related details?

I noted that there is a login link in the client's area, but the login link will not work. In the admin area it uses the IP address of the server WHM runs on, and the port (2087) is for WHM and not the cPanel for the client, which is okay except that I can't login. In the client area, it uses the IP address of the server and the port (2083) for cPanel. Perhaps I am missing something here as well, but I have no idea how to make this work so a client could log into their cPanel.

I'm willing to accept any and all suggestions at this point. Overall I like what I see with WHMCS and would like to make it work for me and my clients.

**UPDATE** I may have found out why I couldn't login for the client's cPanel. Some additional research shows that the passwords for WHMCS client login and cPanel login are not synced, and because they are different, there was some confusion about using the password displayed in WHMCS. I could hack the code and add a note indicating this password is not necessarily the cPanel login password, but if I wind up using WHMCS I think I will put that in as a feature request so I don't have to keep hacking after updates.

Passwords cannot be synced - you can't get them in plain text from cpanel.

For the admin login, the link is a login as root/reseller link hence the WHM port is used - you click the link and enter your root/reseller login details and end up in the users cpanel account regardless of what the login details are.

If you assign dedicated IP addresses to accounts regularly you would want to setup a custom field on the product to hold it.

Thanks for the prompt reply Matt. Certain package types include a dedicated IP address, and on others they are optional. I guess I will now have to look further and make sure WHMCS can support the provisioning of IP addresses for those accounts that include or order one.

I was hoping the password stored in WHMCS could log into cPanel, if it was manually entered and matched the cPanel password. Apparently it will not.

The other issue I noticed after looking at this in more detail is that the link provided within WHM uses the IP address of the server and not the domain name. This generates the error "The certificate is only valid for www.mydomainname.com" as the SSL certificate does not cover the IP address.
