Too many lookups: .NL domain

While trying to find a new name for a Dutch domain, all .NL names were presented as 'Allready Registered'. Even really strange names were shown as registered. But the WHOIS for .NL domains on www.sidn.nl actually said something different: the domains were available ...

The WHMCS Whois logfile showed :

WHOIS Output

Too many requests

But on the user pages, there is no error message. Besides that, why is there a limit on lookup up .NL domainnames? And how can this be avoided? Should Whmcs not be used to find new domainnames?

Unless you're a direct registrar of the appropraite TLD/ccTLD there are restrictions on most of them how many whois attempts you can do in any set period, and reaching or exceededing it on a regular basis is a quick way to get your IP permamently banned.

And how can this be avoided?

Only do lookups on the TLD/ccTLD you are actually interested in rather than every query on every domain extension is a good start :D

Should Whmcs not be used to find new domainnames?

If you/your clients are search search search search searching from domains, then you'll be buying enough to warrant getting a direct account with that domain registrar :D

Thanks, Othellotech!

Yes, I found it in their documentation: regular users can only do a maximum of 15 searches / day in the .NL Whois databases.

It is stated (in Dutch* language) here.

This is bad news. That means that I cannot use WHMCS to provide as a lookup tool to my potential customers. Somehow I thought that those lookups all went through the WHMCS servers and were included in the script purchase. Am I wrong?

very wrong - applications will do the lookups against the registries data, so if teh regostry are limiting you to 15/day, then thats the limit you get.
