If your carrier supports email like 1234567890@carrier.com you don't need a gateway.

 

You don't need a gateway, just connect to someone else who has one, preferable for them to have direct connections to the networks too.

 

Clickatell are a common choice, mBlox and MX Telecom would be my preferred choices but they're both pretty hardcore SMS companies.
