Using WHMCS for a different SaaS Business

How suitable would WHMCS be for a completely different kind of business? We're developing a service for a client and we need the ability to accept online payment and trigger an API call to turn-up the service. Similar to web hosting, but definitely not web hosting. So is it possible to use WHMCS and strip out all the hosting specific features?

WHMCS was developed with web hosting in mind.  However, it may be used for just about any online business.

When installing WHMCS, you will be prompted to enable a payment gateway.  We natively support the ones shown here:  https://docs.whmcs.com/Payment_Gateways

And we provide our API for your use:  https://developers.whmcs.com/api/
