tpl file variable access

Hey all! I'm very new to this prog, but am excited to begin learning it's insides.

In a lot of the tpl files (templates), there are a few functions (like ifs) and also many variable references (starting with $). Is there any central file to edit and change some of these variables? Some of them just seem to be character strings.

Is there also a good refernce for commands (like ifs) that we can use in these files?

Is there a good manual for template modifying with a file 'site map', so we know what tpl file does what part of the layouts exactly?

Heh.!!!...Thanks!

EDIT:...ah...just found the smarty template engine site...nevermind about the command reference! But I'm still curious about variable access and file 'roles'...
