Ebar
Hey there, I'm running into an odd issue where WHMCS seems to randomly be unable to properly authenticate with my mail server. WHMCS gives "SMTP Error: Could not authenticate", and my mail logs show error 535 Incorrect authentication data (set_id=admin@mydomain.com). If I go in and re-enter my password for that account, then try to send the system emails again, they go through just fine. Anyone experienced this before?
twhiting9275
check autofill stuff (lastpass, stickypass, roboform, chrome form, etc). Odds are that you have something that's conflicting there. You'll want to turn off autofill for WHMCS, especially if you're using LastPass
Ebar
So I did narrow it down, and it does seem that WHMCS doesn't "forget" the password or interpret it incorrectly. But what happens is if I go into the settings and change something, it seems to save the shadowed version of the password that is only 8 characters long, instead of keeping what I had previously entered in. If I want to make any changes I need to re-enter the password in there before hitting save. I did disable autofill in chrome, but that doesn't seem to help. The password box is highlighted yellow, usually indicating some sort of automatic entry. I just have no idea what its from.
twhiting9275
Yellow is chrome, usually. At least from personal experience it is. Double check that you've disabled that for that domain in chrome.
Ebar
Ah! So I had already disabled the auto-fill, but I still had the issue. Looks like it was "Google Smart-lock". I dont know why it remembers the wrong password for that thing. It's honestly not very smart. I think it's remembering my admin password to WHMCS and putting it in that SMTP field, which is not that great since I have a different password for virtually every account or user I have. And I can't just disable it for that particular thing apparently.
twhiting9275
It a surprise. Why I don't use Google for passwords really. Have you tried turning that option off and migrating everything into, say LastPass? Honestly, it's far too easy or this information to get cross posted. WHMCS devs should be working on making those fields all unique so this doesn't happen.
