Provisioning mySQL after package purchase

Hi-- I've read the documentation for the WHMCS development tools, and I understand how to fire an event after a user purchases a package.

However, can someone explain the "right" way to provision a mySQL DB for the new User and package? Would I just do it in PHP, connect to the DB as the root user, create a new mySQL user and assign him privileges to a new DB? Or is there a more correct way to do this via APIs so that the WHM / WHmCS system "knows about" the database and user and can remove them automatically?

Thanks for any information, documentation or advice.
