supernix
Hello, I have a customers domain that already exists in WHMCS, but I am wanting to switch it from one registrar to the other before it comes due again. Should I just delete the domain from their account and reorder it?
sparky
No... on the admin domains tab select the other registrar from the dropdown click save and then click the transfer button and follow the prompts. If you dont wish the client to know that it is transfered you are able to change the contact email temporally while the transfer goes through then change it back once completed.
tripler
When you transfer a domain it adds a year to its expiration, are you transferring the domain without them knowing? Do you know if they will renew? if so you will need to remember that and set the domain to manual in their account and accept their payment as so it does not trigger your registrar api to renew yet again. and you will need to update their renew date etc in the client area. If the domain is going to expire soon then usually you cannot initiate a transfer, say within a month, so you may have to wait until next year. That said theres no reason to delete the domain from whmcs... just transfer the domain to your new registrar, I assume you have that new registrar api working with whmcs? If so then you just go into the domain product details and switch it from your old registrar to the new one.
supernix
Odd thing is after stepping through I got this error: Registrar Error Website doesn't exist for blackdragonhapkido.com But then I started getting emails to transfer the domain from the current registrar. So it is like it didn't work but then again it did. Thanks for the heads up. I have never allowed transfers until recently and most everyone usually just renews with the current registrar. I had formed a habit of just registering the domains with the registrar manually. No big deal when you consider just doing one a week or one a month. Moving them over from Name.com to the new registrar is going to pose quite a challenge. Thanks for the heads up about the renewal. I am doing this well in advance since the domain does not expire until April. But my cousin wants to go ahead with it and make sure there is no way at all anything could happen and risk loosing the domain.
And then there was one les
I understand this is an old post, in any case a solution to this problem is at hand for anybody else that might be wanting to transfer domains from one of their registrars to another. Depending on the company/domain, some some companies offer free transfers (UK Domains do) that dont add on another year/two to the domain, its simply a transfer from one registrar to another. If you have this option available to you then you should be able to use their bulk transfer feature, most registrars provide one so you should be okay. Once you have successfully transferred all of the domains or even one by one as you get the verifications, you can then go into: WHMCS Admin > Client > Domains > set the registrar to the new registrar and save, thats it. transferred and updated. As was mentioned, the manual method earlier. I wouldnt recommend doing that transfers outside the system are not ideal either, but the registrar change is simple and makes it the better options. I would also point out, that while the client is registered with you, they have also agreed the terms and conditions of the registrar by registering the domain name. They also have to agree to the terms and conditions of the receiving registrar and you have to submit that your client does agree. by not informing your client you yourself are breaching the registrars terms and conditions. The best policy in business is to be honest and open. Tell your clients you intend to move their domain(s) (they are going to know anyway with a simple who-is lookup) to a new registrar and if its cheaper for you, offer them a reduction. they will likely jump at the chance to save a little money and be more than happy to review and accept the new registrars terms and conditions. This way you are covering your own back and in the process ensuring your won't lose clients because of a misunderstanding.
