Setting up hosting environment?

Currently I am running all my customer's websites though leased dedicated linux servers from Go Daddy. I would like to purchase my own servers and have a reliable backup plan incase of hardware failure.

Does it make sense to hardware balance 2 identical servers? I am thinking about serving traffic to 1 server and have that server write all data to a second server. In case of a hardware failure, I would have the balancer serve traffic to the second server while I fix the first.

Does anyone have any suggestions on doing this a better way?
