i would resiously not dream of putting a VoIP PBX on a shared server, that is asking for trouble. there are 2 really good systems in the wild at present, there is 3CX for windows (Im a Certified Partner) and Trixbox for Linux which is available free.

There is a free edition of 3CX but it is lacking in some features.

I would not use 3CX simply because it runs on Windows and for cost reasons...

As for a Linux option, I would suggest PBX in a Flash. It's Asterisk based (As is Trixbox), includes FreePBX, and is pretty simple to get setup. It also has an active forum.

I used Trixbox for years, and it works fine too. I switched my own PBX, as well as all of my customers' to PBX in a Flash, and have been perfectly happy.

It's an ISO that installs the OS (CentOS5) and the PBX pretty much automatically. It has MANY security enhancements over Trixbox and seems to run on fewer resources.

As for running on a shared server, that depends. I run several (4 currently) PBX in a Flash systems for small (Less than 10 phones) companies, all on one server, using VMWare, although most do it with OpenVZ, or something similar. Again, the PBXInAFlash forums have a bunch of information on this...

Your 800 number, or even local numbers, can be ordered from varius VoIP providers. I use Vitelity for most of my PBX installs, but there are several that work well... A little research for providers that fit your particular needs will work wonders.

Would this also work on centOS4?

Ummm... Not sure. The package comes as an ISO and installs the OS and the PBXinaFlash flavor of Asterisk... Check it out at another site that follows the project: http://nerdvittles.com/

3CX might be fine....But, seriously.... A phone system is not something I would run on a Windows box, much like I wouldn't want to be on a plane that uses Windows for autopilot.

I have Windows servers...I use Windows servers... I'm probably more a Windows guy than a Unix/Linux guy...But, certain tasks, e-mail, DNS, RADIUS, Routing, and PBX are more suited for other platforms.

Not sure what the Windows fuss is. I am running 3CX Virtualized on SVR2008. And it has never had a problem. I think people have a false sense of unease with WIndows. There really is no reason for this, maybe in 2000. But this 2010. And quite frankly, anyone who has sat down to insall and configure a PBX on Linux has had to learn a different method for each PBX out there. The majority of IT folks in a PBX enviroment are going to support Windows. And most of them hate dealing with the NORTEL, ETC. phone guys. I'm sure they would love to have a simple intuitive Windows Form to manage there whole phose system. I set up 3CX virtualized in about 15 mintues.

Most people I run into that say Linux is better are complete clueless.... I have run companies with up to 140 phones with 3cx and 1 Windows box all running for years without trouble. And that other guy saying that you should not run Windows as a DNS server... idiot

I think it comes down to ones first impressions on being introduced to a technology intially. We GROW blinders. I was guilty of this myself. Having come up as a MS & .NET guy. I never used Linux, let alone ran apps using PHP. Overtime, this of course changed. I now believe all technologies compliment each other and have advantages and disadvantages depending on the required outcome. I pick the technology that provides the solution. I have come to like PHP, find it easy to work with. Same with Linux, although, those blinders are not far off, I still prefer working in Win Forms.
