apollo1
Not sure if anyone has a similar scenario... I have a web hosting customer who is using Google Apps on the domain he is hosting with me (ie. his MX records point to Google instead so that he can use gmail as his email system). Fine. Problem is however, whenever I send this person email from my domain (hosted on the same server as his domain), I get a mail delivery failure stating 'no such user'. This makes sense, in that he doesn't have any email accounts set up in cpanel since all his email accounts are set up via Google Apps. Has anyone ever run into this situation or have any suggestions on how to workaround the problem? Basically this user isn't receiving any mailings generated by WHMCS, and I have had to resort to emailing the guy via a gmail account of my own! Thanks for any help.
rmccny
Where are his MX records hosted? If he is hosting his DNS with the registrar and not on the server (i.e. through cPanel) then there are essentially two copies of the DNS zone out there, the one at the registrar with the correct MX record, and the one on the server which probably has the MX record with the mailservers IP. I would take a look at the DNS zone for the clients domain on your server and make sure there are no MX records that point to the server. Good luck!
apollo1
Thanks for the tip. I am not the registrar for this user's domain, and I am not sure if he is hosting his DNS with registrar.. but I do have a DNS zone defined for his domain in my WHM and the MX records all point to Google. I did a little more research and I think there is a possibility his domain was listed in /etc/localdomains when it should have been in /etc/remotedomains, but I am not certain. With that in mind, I edited his DNS zone in my WHM/cpanel and enabled "Always accept mail locally even if the primary mx does not point to this server", then I immediately disabled it (in order to rewrite the config in case it was corrupted). Wouldn't you know, that fixed the problem and I no longer get a delivery failure when I send him email. What a bizarre problem, this one has existed for some time and I am finally glad it's fixed.
rmccny
I ran into about 3 years ago on a client site that was hosted with Lunarpages that also had their own in-house Exchange server so this problem sounded eerily familiar to me. I'm glad you got it fixed although we never did because Lunarpages refused to make the same changes you had to make; wound up referring them to a new host. Cheers!
apollo1
I can see how something got a little messed up on my end, because I inherited this particular client so when I set them up I basically restored an entire cpanel backup from another host. So although most everything restored ok, I guess it wasn't 100% perfect.
