No invoice for domain renewals?

I am a bit confused as to how invoices are generated for domain renewals.

Can someone please remind me again as to why the customer only gets the reminders and what happens when he goes to his control panel and pushes the renew domain button.

I have a customer who basically says to me don't tell me to log in just send me the invoice and I will pay it.

After reading the docs I see that customer will get all the nags and then the invoice in my case 7 days before expiry. Could someone explain what happens when they renew earlier than the invoice date?

Does the system generate an invoice there and then?
