Jessn
Probably a really basic question but how can I set up a PayPal subscription for particular clients who don't want to have to bother with logging in and manually paying invoices every month?
Jessn
Oy I'm so confused! I've been reading through the forums trying to figure this out. Somehow I have to create a PayPal subscription through PayPal right? With the price and billing terms? When I do that do I need to enter in my own Subscription ID into the field there? And then create the button and add that subscription ID to the client's account?
LevelHosting.ca
That's correct, that is how I have setup everything on my backend. In the client area they will have the option of selecting PayPal as a method of payment and they can make remittance this way.
Jessn
Thanks for the reply! Couple of questions: -after I set up the subscription through PayPal do I have to do anything with the button code, or just use the subscription ID? -can I just manually set my clients to be on a subscription now, or do they have to re-signup for that? -how do I make it so that any new people who sign up automatically get signed up on the subscription?

In your whmcs admin select setup >>payment gateways>>paypal In the paypal configuration page there is an option for paypal subscriptions, select that, there is also a option to only show paypal subscriptions button for recurring payments, select that and save. Now when ever someone orders hosting they will only have the option to setup a paypal subscription, and each subsequent payment paypal will send a payment confirmation to your whmcs install, and whmcs will mark it as paid. Any subscriptions initiated at paypal direct (ie not initiated from your whmcs install), will have to be manually marked as paid.
Jessn
I see this option in the PayPal payment gateway: Force Subscriptions: Tick this box to hide the one time payment button when a subscription can be created I don't see anything else about subscriptions though. Do I need to re-setup PayPal in WHMCS to have that option?
LevelHosting.ca
Force Subscriptions: Tick this box to hide the one time payment button when a subscription can be created I don't see anything else about subscriptions though. Do I need to re-setup PayPal in WHMCS to have that option? Out of curiosity, may you try unchecking both of those buttons. In addition, I believe you should have to enter some IPN info initially. Everything your profile shows is how mine looks except it's E-Gold for my gateway but the rest is the same. Nonetheless, I recall originally I had to specify a separate piece of information for PayPal originally. I will try to look back to my files for you.
Jessn
Thanks, I'd appreciate that! Actually I just now checked that box. Until now it's been unchecked, which I guess is why people have been signed up on a month-by-month payment plan rather than a subscription.

Yes, if you select force paypal subscriptions it hides the paypal pay now button, and only leaves the paypal subscriptions button (on products that have a recurring payment). This way all people ordering hosting will be forced to use paypal subscriptions.
Jessn
That's awesome. Now do I need to set something up in PayPal to make that a subscription from now on, or will it just do it automatically? And how about current clients that are paying as a month-by-month. How do i get them onto the subscription too?
HostOrca
The only thing you need to do in paypal, is make sure that you activate IPN (I think that's what it's called), but do not enter a URL there (WHMCS will automatically set that when the subscription is created). People paying month to month at the moment, the next time they receive a invoice, they will only have the paypal subscription option as payment method, so they'll then be forced to create a subscription.
Jessn
Hey that's great! Thanks! Yeah the IPN is already set up and working fine. Thanks again!
