Client Profile: "Next Due Date"

I can't seem to find anything in the documentation or on the forum about this field.

 

In the Client Profile, Products/Services tab there is a field called "Next Due Date".

 

I generated an invoice today and it shows the next due date is today.

 

What does "due date" mean? is it the date the next invoice is DUE to be generated or the date the payment is DUE?

 

How do i generate and send an invoice in the middle of the month for services to start on the first of next month?
