Automatic invoice generation timing

I'm setting up a new WHMCS installation and I'm trying to understand how most people handle automatic invoice generation. Right now I'm wondering whether it's better to generate invoices several days before the due date or only on the due date itself.

I'm interested in hearing what has worked well for other hosting providers. Has changing the invoice generation timing helped reduce late payments or support tickets? I'd appreciate any recommendations before I settle on the default settings.
