After upgrade: An upgrade is currently in progress... Please come back soon...

I was upgrading WHMCS from version 3.3 (I believe), but something went wrong..

Everywhere I get the message:

An upgrade is currently in progress... Please come back soon...

Wen I look at the installer again it only gives the option for a new installation :(

(yes I deleted the installation directory but it didn't solve the problem)

Does anyone have an idea?

I think you have to stair step your upgrades if you are not upgrading from the previous version. Otherwise you will need to run the "new installation" method.

A new installation will not overwrite your client data, but If I recall you will need to setup the general configuration again.

I would take a backup before proceeding

*NEVER* run new installation when upgrading. You can upgrade from any version later than 3.2 to the latest V3.5.1 version without needing to do any of incremental upgrades. Follow GopherHosts suggestion above to try the upgrade again.

I recall an upgrade that mentioned for a step down version, otherwise a "New installation" is needed.

am I loosing it?
