In header.tpl, I've created: 

<head>

    {if $templatefile == 'homepage'}
    <meta name="description" content="{$LANG.meta_description_homepage}" />
    <meta name="keywords" content="{$LANG.meta_keywords_homepage}" />
    {/if}

In /lang/overrides/english.php, I have: 

<?php

$_LANG['metakeywords']['homepage'] = "..."
$_LANG['metadescription']['homepage'] = "..."

?>

However, on the front end, I see:
