New PayPal integration created subscription as created but not active... didn't collect money.

Recommended Posts

I'm currently on php 7.0, whmcs 7.9.2 (working on upgrading our templates now for 7.10.1); we recently switched to the new payment gateway offered in the 'Featured Payment Gateways' section for PayPal. This is the gateway that asks to link to your account and then has only a Client ID and Client Secret saved. No other options available within the module itself.

I received a complaint from one of our new clients this morning that it wouldn't take their money and it didn't set up their service with our billing system. Here's the status of everything:

On WHMCS we have a product set up with annual billing on a recurring cycle. It has Free setup but $15.99 for an annual price.

When the client ordered our product it created an invoice that looks like this:

all correct so far. But then it created a subscription at PayPal that doens't look right... "Trial Period"? Initial Payment? ... additionally, it's not active, it's Created. I get that the client used a discount code that changes the first payment amount but shouldn't it be Initial Payment of $7.99 and no Trial Period?... Why "Created" and not "Active"?

Semantics aside, it didn't actually collect any money from the client either. Do we have to wait 5 days for the 'Due Date' to come up on the invoice? why was that set 5 days after today... why not instant? How do i tell the system to collect the money?

Additionally... when i look up that subscription id in the client profile (where it saved it):

Lastly, I checked logs on the WHMCS side and couldn't find anything. Nothing in Billing > Gateway Log. Nothing pertinent to the problem in Logs > Activity Log, so i checked the paypal side and they report a 404 of the subscription id from the integration, but success from the actual signup.

Any help isolating the issue or explanation as to what I've miss-configured would be a great help... as it stands, it's a terrible experience for new clients. 😞

I've removed the new gateway from my checkout for now and reverted to the old 'basic paypal' gateway until i can figure this out but this client is stuck in limbo until i can get this resolved.

Thank you for your time and help!
