throwing an exception in addons module with WHMCS taking over

Hi,  Im trying to throw an expection in an addons module, so I can catch then error then send it to the WHMCS log, but WHMCS is taking over the expection and requesting it to be in a specific format and dumping it straight to error_log.  How can I prevent this from happening?
