What happens to paypal reoccurring billing when a client upgrades or downgrades a service? (7.1.1)

In this case, a client upgraded from a $6.00 plan, to a $10.00 plan, and the system credited them $1 (as it should) and sent a order confirmation But that was it.

 

1. on a whim, I manually sent a "other product/service welcom email" and to my suprise that email said exactly what it I needed to say about the new product activation.

-Was I supposed to manually send that?

 

2. The client was my wife (as a true live test) so I saw the client end and she was not directed to paypal to "order" the new service, but she was credited.

-Does this mean we will have to wait until the next billing cycle for it to charge the new amount for the upgrade?
