How to apply promotion via API(internal/external) ?

Is there any proper API method through promotion/ discount can be applied to customer's invoice.

 

In case it is present, please highlight such API method, else devise some process/steps (technically) to properly apply promotion to invoice (already generated (unpaid) ).
