$join fails in select_query

A number of times I have tried to implement a $join in a WHMCS report. Each time there is an empty result set.

 

For example: editing the Transactions report:

$join = "tblinvoiceitems ON tblinvoiceitems.invoiceid=tblaccounts.invoiceid";

$result = select_query("tblaccounts",implode(',',$fieldlist),implode(' AND ',$filters),"date","ASC"),$join;

 

Even without any filtering i get an empty result.

 

Has anyone had success in using $join in a select_query? Any ideas?
