Correct procedure to downgrade with an outstanding invoice

Hi

 

We have been using WHMCS for around 6 years now and we still struggle to do something as simple as downgrade a product where an invoice has already been raised.

 

Without editing the tblhosting table (which is what we do now) what do other people do when a client wants to downgrade a product that already has an invoice raised?
