WHMCS SMTP and Windows Live Domain Help

Okay so this one has me lost, so hoping maybe you guys can lend a hand.

I am presently using PHPMAIL to send general emails out via WHMCS (using pop3 import for support departments), but I am using an external email provider (in this case Hotmail/Outlook/Windows Live Domains) and most of the phpmail generated emails are hitting junk mail folders.

Now what I want to do is setup WHMCS email for SMTP, but it isn't playing kindly with it for some reason. I've set it up following all of the general guides, smtp.live.com port 25 (or 587) with TLS/SSL (tried both in combination with the ports, no encryption as well, etc) -- yet for some reason when I send a test email to a test client account, it spits out the generic CONNECTION ERROR for SMTP.

I've seen a few guides for google mail to get it to work with that, so I am considering switching to that as an alternative, but wanted to see if anyone has had any luck getting SMTP to work with the hotmail/outlook/windows live domains stuff.

Someone else in here is having this same problem. Not sure what it is. Could be a whmcs problem. But question. is your server hosted for you? Or do you run it yourself? And if so what kind of server is it. I imagine its probably a firewall issue. Those ports being blocked.
