WHMCS License Options

^DJ_Link^

Question

Hello! I just installed whmcs 15 days trial and i'm very impressed =)

havent' still scratched the surface of it but already was able to import my accounts from whm and all that. Great Job.

I'm considering buying a WhmCS licence but i'm a little confused about the options. There is the monthly and the forever option. but in both them there is the branding option which i don't get it. What is this? why is none more expensive.

Also in the On time option we can choose to pay for updates and support. Imagine this, i don't want to pay for it. But later one i wish to update, i can still buy it?

sorry about the big text :P

branding removal just means that "Powered by WHMCS" doesnt appear in the client area.

As far as support/update option, yes, you can purchase it later if you want to upgrade AFAIK.

Can anyone confirm this?

This sounds a little odd, because if you do not pay for the support/update for 2 years, then pay for it you suddenly get to upgrade from 3.0 to 5.0? Does not make sense to me.

Its pretty common. If you want a direct answer from WHMCS staff, you should submit a ticket to them. The forums are not for official support.

I can confirm it is optional to renew and you only have to renew when you want to. However, we would never provide an upgrade path from a V3 version to V5 automatically. You would have to order our professional upgrade service. With the upgrade script you can normally upgrade by yourself from the past 4/5 releases.

Ahh catch 22 if you decide to not pay for upgrades for a year then you can't upgrade yourself because the upgrade script won't work from every release in the past year.

Not really

I am not sure but normally you would be able to download the latest version and install it. With some hard work you will be able to import or whatever your accounts etc.

The main problem is rather the interim upgrades itself.

If a security hole or bug or whatever was discovered and fixed your installation will not have it during the period without upgrades.

In general the benefits by far outweight the upgrade fees because of a more stable and secure program with more features. Each upgrade improve something somewhere and if you see at month 9 that something was added or changed that will save you a lot of time and go for the upgrade fee, you could as well purchased it 9 months ago and benefit much more.

Also remember open source programs like this and the upgrade system is by FAR better than commercial software where you must pay AGAIN if you want to upgrade from Win 95 to 2000, or want a new version of your favority program or game.

What are you talking about? This isnt open source and is a commercial product.

Commercial Open source product is more correct.

Strickly speaking it is still an open source program where you have access to some programming code unlike programs like Windows, Quickbooks etc.

No, not at all. Your obviously not familiar with those markets. 99% of the WHMCS's logic is encoded. You cant count the templates. Heck, even windows lets you change its colors, layouts, etc.

Commercial open source products allow you access to 95% of the code, if not all.

You can in no way consider an open source product, commercial or not. WHMCS is great and am in now way sayings its not, im just stating that this user is incorrectly labeling it.

I have to chime in as you are way off base with your descriptions of WHMCS. It is commercial software and has nothing to do with open source and is encoded as MACscr wrote.

In my post you were targeting my catch22 phrase which stands valid. While I plan on keeping up to date subscriptions, I felt it was a little underhanded to require them or get hit with upgrade fees.

I can imagine how a user would feel if they were suddenly in this situation with no prior warning. After all WHMCS sales pages do not leak this information in any way and actually lead a potential customer into believing that they could re-apply for their support and be able to upgrade their version. When actually they may need to also pay an upgrade fee.

But as I also said before, I believe users that have owned licenses should and would keep their support options current with little or no lapse as long as the support remains low. At my time of purchase I believe I had figured the cost + support for 1 year we would have began to be ahead of the game after around 18 months.
