VPS and domains

ddenev

Question

Hi,

I created a VPS/Dedicated Server product. When the client orders this product he is presented with a page where he can choose the server hostname, the nameserver prefixes and a password. I have these questions:

1. Why the entered servername is not WHOIS-ed? I entered server.ibm.com and the order went through fine. Shouldn't it be checked?

2. What are the nameserver prefixes used for? What is their purpose in the created plan? I've seen other VSP providers - they just ask for a domainname which is checked for availability and then proceed with the order details.

Thank you.

1. It would be nice to get a confirmation of the fqdn host name if it is already owned. But WHMCS doesn't do that. I suppose by altering the template you could do something with Ajax. But remember, even if someone enters server.ibm.com and they don't own the ibm.com domain, it is still a valid hostname, and hence whay is the point of checking really? Only to get a confirmation of who owns it, in my opinion could cut back on some common mistakes, but that's all.

2. Usually nameservers are just NS1 NS2 etc... but some people prefer other names, such as dingbat.server.com or bingo.server.com :)

Why would it be? Someone may be moving an existing server. There's nothing to say the name should always not be in use already.

They are for the nameservers you will setup for clients. If you don't offer anything other than the defaults then you can hide the options by editing the templates. Some do though, and that's why they are there.
