Knowledge base - possible to get nested array of all categories?

Is it possible to get all the knowledge base categories via a query so I can arrange it eg as nested list? I'm not sure how to get the nested category list with the Smarty template system eg as multi-dimensional array. End result would be a nested <ul> list. Is there a "smarty" way of doing this?

 

Advice appreciated - any ideas?

Sorry - forgot to add - also any way to display articles directly under category on overview page similar to http://support.twitter.com/groups/31-twitter-basics ?

 

Again, needed would be a way to find all articles by category & iterate through them & output the title.

 

Simple in MySQL but how in Smarty?
