You only need to buy an SSL cert for your billing domain, which might be the same as your main domain or might be a subdomain. The self signed cert from cpanel will prompt the user, and that will make you look like a backyard host. If you can't afford $14.95 or $25 to put SSL on your billing domain ... well, I won't draw conclusions, but you just can't be serious!

Hey,

No, you should use a real SSL cert for your billing domain.

However for the global cPanel/WHM login it self, do go out and buy a cert. You will need to get a new SSL cert for each customer that uses that server if you do not want it to error out.

I think you've completely missed the mark in this thread :)

He wasn't asking anything to do with cPanel, he was just using the URL format as an example of how he does a secure login and wondering if there were any similarities - which, of course, there aren't, other than the https:// at the start :)

For cPanel, buy a cert for the server's hostname and redirect http://www.domain.com/cpanel to https://hostname:2083, that solves the ssl login errors for cPanel - no need to buy a cert for each domain!

</ramble> :P

Threads already off topic.

But thats not true. SSL cert is only for one domain, so lets say you want one for the hostname (cool.server.com) cPanel makes its own SSL cert for cool.server.com. However if you have a website called hosting.com and go to like hosting.com/cpanel doesn't matter if you bought an SSL cert for cpanel or used the default one with cpanel its going to error out as the cert is only meant for cool.server.com

Adam, you're missing the point he made - cpanel will redirect to the host's domain name if you ask it to, there's a setting for that, which will stop any extra confirmations for SSL certs. We don't do that as it annoys resellers who like to brand their cpanel access. In any case, the server cert is fine as they just have to OK it and they're in.
