How to see if user is logged in templates USING PHP?

I want to know where this information is stored. I DONT want to use the $loggedin smarty variable, or access this smarty variable via php in the template. I want to know where in SESSION or in the SERVER variable, is the users login details stored. Or at least, the fact that he is logged in?
