Unusable Characters in Password Reset

I have MD5 passwords disabled and when a client request a password reset they get an email with a random password.

However, it seems that our clients get an email containing a password that does not contain characters than can be used. (Image: pass01.gif)

They are symbols and not letters / numbers

The same symbols / number are present in the Customer Profile screen (pass02.gif)

I have checked and the Character set is UTF-8 (which is the default)

Is this correct for the UK?
