Royalty fees -- Should I use affiliates?

I am looking at using manually assigned affiliates as a way to track and pay a royalty on some specific products and allow the people entitled to the royalty to see their activity -- seems to do what I need (although I'd really like it if a specific product could always trigger an affiliate fee, rather than needing to be manually set).

 

But if I want to also allow the customary use of affiliates to pay referral fees, then a "normal" referral blocks me from being able to manually assign the affiliate.

 

Any way to do both?
